Albuquerque Tango Festival
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Is there a minimum level of tango experience required to participate in the festival? Yes, except for the beginner's track. Outside of the beginner's track the classes are all geared to an intermediate level and above. This generally means 2-3 full years of dancing and studying tango. Also, the demanding navigation required at the milongas necessitates, at a minimum, a solid intermediate level of dancing, again meaning at least 2-3 full years of dancing tango. If you have danced tango for less than this period of time, you are welcome to participate in the beginner's track, beginner's milonga, and practica.

What is the gender balance?
We expect a near perfect gender balance. For those of you for whom this is particularly important, throughout the month of October I will post weekly gender ratio updates based on the registrations received to date.

What can I expect as regards floor-craft?
Come expecting exceptional floor-craft! It is vitally important to me that the Albuquerque Tango Festival be known as exhibiting superior floor craft. Toward this end, I am distributing 10 Principals of Impeccable Floor Craft, which we ask every dancer to read, and acknowledge, as part of the registration process. Each instructor teaching at the festival will be promoting courteous and disciplined floor craft. As well, in the month prior to the festival, I have planned presentations in front of the group classes of nearly a half-dozen instructors with the aim of promoting top-notch floor craft at the festival.

What is the general level of dancing that I can expect at the festival? Argentine tango has instructed in Albuquerque and Santa Fe since the mid 1990s. We have a core community of dancers with over a decade of study and experience. And, like all communities we have many beginning and intermediate level dancers. The milongas at this festival are focused on the intermediate level and above dancer, with a minimum of two to three years of solid Argentine tango instruction and experience. For dancers who are not yet at a solid intermediate level, with considerable experience dancing in crowded milongas, we ask that forgo the evening milongas and develop your dance, navigation, and etiquette skills at the beginner's milonga and the guided practica.
